White board or chalk board?

I need a white board or a chalk board for an out door workshop. Its a cold room, and in winter subject to damp.

I expect to have to make regular if not daily notes on the board but don't want these notes to dissapear with condensation, or chalk to break down in damp.... Memos and notes will also be left between people....

I know that noth will be subject to wear of the environment, but not sure whether a white board or a chalk board and associated pens/chalk will be the more durable under the circumstances.

Does anybody else have experience or opinion?

No direct experience, but I have seen chalk that has been subject to damp. It does not work well at all, and turns almost to a paste.

Unless you are going to keep the chalks in an airtight container, I would say a chalk board would not work too well.
  • I know of a 'well ventilated' workshop with a white board in that seems to work quite well. The door it's screwed to is often open to the rain too.

I painted a chalkboard in the kids playhouse a few years ago, and the drawings done in September/October time were still there in March (ish) when we next really used it. It was just an old draughty shed (hence not being used in winter), and was very damp.
The chalks had disintegrated though, but the stuff on the chalkboard was fine.

Chalk is really cheap, whiteboard pens are expensive and waste more plastic. Tupperware will solve the wet chalk issue, and let's face it, it's a well-tested old technology and you will always know just when chalk levels are low unlike some pens!

Chalkboard with chalkpens should sort your problem, yes, you have to wash the writing off, but its quick and easy.

We have a blackboard in the kitchen which seems to cope with humidity without any problems.

I had a whiteboard in my (inside a barn) workshop which actually expanded and went all lumpy.

Having said that, as a professional user of and black and whiteboards, I reckon a good quality whiteboard and dry markers would be your best bet.

Thanks everyone, gloomy doom, essentially, this is barn conditions. I think I might be best with a chalk board and chalk pens, a wet cloth and maybe a tipper ware for old fashioned chalk. Having a more semi permanant mark in chalk pens might actually be advantageous, I want to draw a chart that will be subject to change, every few weeks but also have contents changing weekly, so the chart could be drawn in chalk pen and the contents in chalk out of the Tupperware.

Thank you for time and thoughts everyone!

We use glassboards and pentel wet erase chalk markers.

Although not the cheapest (about £100 for a mounted glassboard and about £20 for the markers).

    It's in the court process.

As a matter of respect to legal process I obviously cannot really update till that's over and done with. :D. Not to worried about the situation though. Will update when able, promise.
