I had PPI with A&L on a credit card. MBNA took over the credit card when A&L was sold to Santander. I no longer have the account number for the A&L account and Santander are being very difficult if not impossible to deal with. I wrote to the recordes department of A&L to see if they still had the account but no such luck. What do I do now. Account was set up in 1996.

Spend £10 a do a data subject access request and they will supply copies of what they have. If they have nothing and you have nothing then its game over.
The open date isnt what matters. It is the closing date that does. Firms typically keep a rolling 6 years of records (although some keep for longer and some much longer). Documentation on closed accounts will typically be destroyed before data on open accounts is. i.e. a firm will likely keep opening records for as long as the account is open. However, on closure, they will look to destroy them after a defined period.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only.
