SMP and other income

I currently work full time, and hope to be taking maternity leave next year, returning to work after a year.

I was on the verge of declaring myself as self-employed to the tax people, in addition to my main job, as I have a couple of hobbies that I'd like to run as a business in my spare time. One in particular (android app development) is the sort of thing that I could do work on now, and would continue to provide some passive income even in months when I am unable to work on it.

However, I'm worried that it will affect my SMP, if I an receiving an income from another source? The income I make is likely to be less than SMP. I wouldn't want to lose my SMP for the sake of £10 a week income. But this is something that I'd really like to do.

Does anyone know the rules on this?
