Must return Mac.Pro but have downloaded software

I'm looking for advice. I purchased a MacBook pro from John Lewis last week. I've "personalized" it in that I've purchased and downloaded Microsoft Office The trackpad and keyboard aren't working, using an external keyboard I was able to sign on. and going to preferences it says "No trackpad found". It had worked at first. I have restarted it with a safe boot and searched online a bit for solutions. If I return it to John Lewis, and they send me a new computer, how do I get M. Office on my a replaced computer without repaying again? How do I get it off the computer I am returning?
The fan is running hard...

Plug in a USB mouse if necessary.

I've purchased and downloaded Microsoft Office

Just to confirm - did you purchase the RETAIL box version of office or download/purchase office 2011 completely online?

I ask because many box versions just contain the serial number/product key to unlock pre-installed versions or versions you download yourself.

In any case, I would make sure the tech at JL knows the situation. I would be very surprised if JL didn't sort this all out for you assuming you are lucky and get someone that knows their stuff.

Bear in mind that the licence for Office 2011 for Mac binds to the individual Mac, not to the user. It needs to be completely removed from the Mac you’re returning, to preserve the licence. You can’t just copy it over to a new Mac.

  • Gratis, Gratis! and thank you Ant555.

I talked with Apple support, laptop is not reparable, so then telephoned JL. Some hours passed dealing with the attempted repair and subsequent JL customer support. JL will replace the item, and my understanding was from both sources that Office would be removed from the computer once returned.
However, Gratis, your 2nd post has given me pause for thought, perhaps it is best to remove it tonight before packing the item for collection. Alas, probably too late to telephone Msoft. The software was purchased online. The only other item added was Skype.
Working with external mouse and external keyboard. Gratis your link will be so valuable. Thank you both.

Definitely remove Office completely from your Mac before parting with it.

Before doing so, make a note of all its various serial numbers and suchlike.

If you can, copy on to an external hard drive or USB drive the Office installer file that you downloaded.

Then, if you can, do a full system restore (from the recovery partition on your Mac's hard drive) to erase your personal details and data.

Call Microsoft when you can; tell them what has happened and they will sort out the re-registration of Office on your new Mac. They are used to doing this because people upgrade their hard drives and this can cause registration and permissions problems.

I keep all my various registration details backed up on a secure cloud in case of a hardware disaster.

I wish you much better luck with your new one! :)
