LIDL are selling these for £1.99 - available from today (Monday 11th June) till stocks run out. :D

And, they sell GB magnetic plates for £0.99 from Thursday! :T

whether you want to argue that one with "Le gendarme" at the side of the road is up to you.

French traffic cops are armed. Not just with handguns, but semi-automatic rifles. They have also heard of this "EU" thing, and are of the opinion that it has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with French traffic laws.

Basically, to keep them happy, you need to take enough emergency equipment to justify painting your car green with a yellow "2" on the roof!

We took the ferry to Calais then drove to Dordogne in April - my first time in foreign country let alone driving in one!
WE took beam deflectors - 99p + p+p on ebay! first aid kit, warning triangle, bulb set, GB sticker, 1 yellow jacket. We had 3 under 5's with us so the essentials list for us was ful of all kinds of wierd things!
We had an encounter with a "Le gendarme" on the motorway. Our 2 yr old was travel sick all the way and on a sick stop in a lay by they pulled in. Very nice guys! My French is very basic so there i was hand gesturing a sick motion. Which leads me to travel sickness potions for passengers!! The food in the motorway stop s was limited and a bit pricey so be prepared with bottled water and snacks.
    Have a good time!

I drove to France last September for the first time and looked in Halfords for all the "gumph" I needed to take, it added up to quite a bit, another customer approached me and said if I was sailing P&O it would be cheaper to buy one of their all in one packs on the Ferry. I am so glad I listened, it includes everything legally required, I also got a French Atlas and some wine vouchers. It was £40, and it is all in one compact carry case.
