Learning to drive...a new car or old?

I would probably go for a second hand one.
Personally, I only passed my test in May this year. And after a week on my mum's insurance my grandpa very kindly offered to buy me a car up to £2000. (Even though car was bought for me, I pay all my own road tax, insurance, petrol etc) I got 8 year old Ka, and I love it (didn't use the full £2000) I feel more comfortable driving in it than I did in my mum's new car. Even after driving solo for 3 months, after 7 months of lessons I still feel like I'm learning new things all the time.
Luckily I've haven't had any bumps, I am quite a careful driver. But if I did I wouldn't feel as bad as if I had one in a new/fairly new car. I am planning on getting a new car in a couple of years when I feel like I have more experience.
My mum is a named driver on my car, and she does drive it occasionally, as we have a driveway, my car is always at the back as I am up and out early for work (6am starts) So sometimes it's just easier for her to take my car to nip down to the shops rather than moving both to get out then moving both back in again later. My insurance is £58 a month.
Hope this helps somewhat.0
