Some countries do insist on a passport being valid for a period after your proposed departure.

It can be up to 6 months for some countries.

They tend to be pretty obscure places like China and Egypt.

Within the EU, British Citizens have an absolute right to travel, live and work so long as we can prove our nationality. So a valid passport is probably more than is needed: travel with an expired passport may well be possible but would be more trouble than its worth.

But in this case we're talking France.

I do know that. I did read the first post.

That is why in the second post on this thread, I gave the OP a link to the Directgov website that gave details of foreign travel to FRANCE - which fully answered the question she asked and therefore negated the necessity of your smart alec (not) reply to the OP in post #3.

The post of mine that you quoted (below):

was in agreement with another poster who mentioned that some countries insist on having a period of validity left on a passport after departure.

The clue is I said (twice) 'some countries'.

    See my post #13.

I was agreeing with Cloudydaze who made the point that the OP had not asked such a silly question as dannny seemed to think.

Kapoww admitted that he/she was unaware that some countries (however obscure you think China and Egypt are) do insist on having a period of validity left on a passport after departure.

What happened to travel in EU with no passports required. Were we not promised this years ago? I know I've been to France and nobody looked at mine though I was on a bus, what happens when you go with the train?

During the short-lived ID card scheme you could travel within the EU with one of those instead of a passport. Howver as it has now been withdrawn you need a passport as we are not part of the Schengen group of countries.

AIUI if you're an EU citizen you can travel between EU countries without a passport. However - you need to prove you're an EU citizen, and the only acceptable UK document for proving it is...your passport! So you need a passport!

Well the only way you can prove that you are a British citizen and therefore entitled to freely travel throughout europe is to produce a passport, it is also currently the only way certain things are recorded, e.g. no fly list etc so when we did have ID cards you still needed to present your passport for air travel, just as most airlines will insist on a passport for internal flights due to no fly lists etc.
