RAM which one?

I am thinking about upgrading DS1 RAM in his laptop.Acer Aspire 7730ZG

Crucial recommend - 4GB kit (2GBx2), 200-pin SODIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 memory module. Yet when I expand the window there are other compatible RAM with different numbers.

What do these numbers mean?
Are some RAM 'faster' / better than others?

Many thanks

dx

The laptop can use either PC2-5300, 667MHz or PC2-6400, 800 MHz. The 6400 is faster but the laptop may not be able to use it at its full speed and will only run it at 667MHz. If they cost the same you may as well buy the higher speed as it may run at full speed and nothing is lost if it does not.

How much RAM is fitted at the moment because spending £40 upgrading may not give the results you expect.

    Ah, thanks for that info.
It has 3GB RAM at the moment and can only take a max of 4GB (2x2GB )

It's an old machine but we would like it to limp along for a while longer.

I was wondering if upgrading Windows 7 32bit to 64bit would help....I started this quest a few weeks ago but the summer holidays got in the way!

The RAM atm is NANYA .. there is a 1x2GB for sale on Ebay at the moment and wondered if that might be worth buying.
Other than that I have asked on the local freecycle for any RAM.

Going from 3gb to 4gb will not yield any spectacular results. I doubt you'd even notice, TBH.
you'll get better value for money doing a proper clean of unused programs, bloatware, and antivirus, as well as cleaning out the fan intakes of dust to ensure it's still cooling effectively.

Laptops generally don't use top speed ram, because it generates more heat which is a problem for them.

that said, if you can get a 2Gb ram module to replace the 1Gb one in there already, and it's cheap, it can't hurt to try.

Is 4GB the physical limit? Windows 7 32- bit can only address a maximum of 4GB RAM anyway, and a bit of that is reserved by the graphics system etc. So I doubt that you'll 'see' more than maybe 3.75BGB if you put in 4GB.
If you can get it cheap, then no harm in trying, but I don't think you'll see any improvement worth £40. Better to do a Factory Restore/clean install or just run CCleaner if you want to get a bit more speed for now.

4GB RAM is max given by specs.

My son wants to play Runescape and he isn't able to........

I will do a clean install and update the drivers.
Clear out the dust, and uninstall McAfee. I believe that there is a special program needed to uninstall McAfee could someone point me in the right direction please?

The laptop is 'full' of rubbish so this should help.

    Thanks for the suggestions

PS If we but 2GB RAM to replace the 1GB RAM does it need to be by the same manufacturer?

you might find that upgrading to 64bit operating system could reduce your performance. As 64bit will end up using more memory (so effectively having less to go around).

upgrading from 3gb to 4gb is rarely worth it as the whole 4gb wont be usable with a 32bit OS
