and..... what do you think the prospects are of making a living wage between November and March?

Most owner/operators of these see it only as a late spring/summer/early autumn operation. They generally already have another full time position that pays for the bread and butter. The ice cream van provides the jam for the extras in life.
When it's not the time of day when people are going to buy stuff from home, I'll just setup in a lay-by somewhere on a busy road. Can read, watch DVDs on my laptop etc, sell the odd ice cream. Then I can just blag the money I don't make by faking sales. I'd only have to pretend to sell 30 odd ice-creams a day to make the 190 I'd need to make up the minimum wage. Then I'd be basically semi-retired :)
  • You can be working, and not earning. When the ice cream sales are slow you could be popping leaflets door to door offering a party catering service. As long as you put the hours in then there is no issue.

On a related point Ice Cream - Perfect for money laundering, and selling illegal drugs, so watch out for erm "the Competition"
Be Careful not to tread on !!!!! toes.

    Or am I cynical.

Good Luck. I'm sure that you'll do well. Remember the Car shows in summer. I love to look at classic cars and eat ice cream.

You don't have to make a bean, just put the hours in, and some of those can be a home making leaflets, or servicing and washing the van, or arranging pitches with the organisers of car shows, or travelling to devonshire ice cream suppliers to do a full supplier assessment. Or visiting an exhibition in food equipment in London (Once had a day at a pachaging expo, all exes paid)
