A switch takes from 3-5 weeks, so do it around 7/9.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

My current fix with EDF finishes at the end of September. Looks like Ill be better off switching to n power at that point.
When is the best time to sign up for the switch - now, or wait until 30th Sept?
As macman says, it takes a minimum of 3 weeks to switch supplier so normally you should not apply until 21 days or less before the existing deal is to end.
However, with most (all?) EDF tariffs now there are no early exit fees, so all you possibly will miss out on is a few days/weeks of the lower rates they currently presumably charge you.
However, you need to balance this against the risk the nPower tariff may be pulled to new applicants if you don't apply now. I understand some of the best deals have already been pulled recently.0
