Hi there,

Wonder if anyone out there can advise me.

I started work on 5 August and tried to use the 0845 number to sign off JSA a few days earlier, however I kept getting cut off with an automated message to say they were busy and call back. After about 10 attempts, I finally gave up.

Once I started work, there was no way I could contact them because I am not allowed to make or receive personal telephone calls at work as it is in financial services and they are very strict about it and my mobile for some reason does not do 0845 calls and if it did it would cost a fortune as these people are almost impossible to get hold of.

The signing off department is only open 9 to 5 weekdays and I am at work during that time.

So I filled in the ES40 book and wrote a letter explaining my situation and got a family member to hand it in to the Jobcentre, it was handed in on 8 August.

It is almost the 19th and I haven't heard a thing. All the other new starters in my group at work have all been sorted out.

Also the agency who I am employed with, their head office cocked up my P46 and have now been clobbered for tax at BR rate. I phoned HMRC and it will take time for code to adjust. I get paid weekly so I will be clobbered next week as well until it goes into the system

So I need my P45 to get a refund from HMRC and the 8 days JSA the DWP owe me.

Just wondering if it takes this long for them to sort it, or should I be getting worried about it.

Many thanks in advance.

I closed my claim on the 6th after i started work on the 5th and i have still not received my P45, When i spoke to them last Friday i was told it could be another 2 weeks before i receive my P45

  • You will get the P45 in due course and your code will get sorted out - it will just take a little time.
Once you have it - send it to the agency you work for as this will at least get you onto code 944L Week 1 emergency code which is obviously much nearer to the correct code of 944L. HMRC will then process the P45 and issue the P2/P6 coding notice to the agency and this will get you onto the correct cumulative code for the year.

Many thanks for replies. Thank goodness I get paid weekly and had to wait only one week in hand for my wages, I managed to borrow off family and friends. If it was up to relying on the DWP for my final payment as my only source of income, I would have starved to death. It baffles me that when they get people off their books, which is their main objective, they make things as difficult and obstructive as they possibly can.

I just think that almost 2 weeks of waiting for my final JSA payment and my P45 is taking the mick.

I suppose I will just have to wait a little longer, however, if they continue to drag their heels, they will feel the sharp end of my tongue.

I rang and said I was signing off on the 2nd July, I had to re sign again on the 26th July. On the 6th August, I got a call about closing my claim fom the 2nd july, I have to wait for that to close before they can put me back on again. Seeing as they weren't going to sign me off fully, because it was only 4 weeks work, they have actually signed me off, so I have to go through the whole six week carryon.
When the DWP say 2 weeks, they actually mean 6.

Why not just do another p46?

Your p45 from the dwp will most likely put you on a week 1 basis code, unless you gave the dwp your p45 when you made your claim

I did give the DWP a copy of my P45 for my JSA claim when I was made redundant in September last year. I thought that they can only take taxable income into account from the new tax year 2013 and from April 2013 to 5 August, my only income was JSA which I know is taxable.

I phoned the tax office last Thursday and the person on the other end has amended my tax code to 944L on the system, however, he said it will take up to 72 working hours to reach my agency employers system. The agency processes wages on a Monday and it reaches my bank account on a Friday, so I doubt it would have been sorted for this weeks wage. If it has then I will be amazed.

If it hasn't shown on Friday's wage then I will wait a little longer to see if HMRC has done what they promised, if not I will be banging another P46 in straight away as you suggest.

It just irks me that the DWP are so slow and incompetent. All they have to do for gods sake is to push a few buttons on a computer to sort me out and they seem incapable of doing that properly.

Some good news at last, got my payslip and the tax office have done what they promised and my tax code has been amended, so I am rather amazed that it was sorted out sooner than they stated.

However, still waiting for the P45 and the £80 or so that the DWP owe me. I feel sorry for the people that have to work a month in hand and cannot borrow money to live on and get to work. I think that it is ludicrous that regional benefit centres that probably employ thousands drag their heels like this. There again, if it is anything like my local job centre, all they will probably do is sit on their fat backsides idly chatting to their colleagues all day.
  • Why did you not hand your ES40 book in when you first learnt you'd got a job if that said it was another way to sign off?
