  • Carer's Allowance cannot be claimed whilst studying full time. You might be interested to read about this student, who is also a carer, and his campaign to change the rules.

I assume him doing 60hrs of care for your partner is a relatively new thing? Whoever did these hours of care whilst he was at school would they be able to pick up the slack when he is at college. I can't imagine him being able to sustain that level of care with college, study and having a life himself - never mind sleep!

Whilst I agree with the sentiment and that young man is something to be proud of (I can only wish mine turn out as well), the article is written to show caring as chores. So what if he has to do housework? It needs to be done anyway and isn't caring etc.

The article states very little about his caring and alludes to long periods alone so as not to dip below 90%.

Thanks everyone. I rang tax credits and child benefit when he enrolled last year and they accepted the course as full time for there purposes. But he is increasingly caring for his dad and although I didn't think you could claim tax credits child benefit and him study and get carers I thought it was worth asking as caring for his dad does stop him working part time to support himself with things such as bus fares mobile phone and socialising. I will check with carers this week to be sure and let you all know

But as he's in full time education and you receive CB/CTC for him, he doesn't need to support himself, does he? Apart perhaps from the socialising and he can have precious little time for that when he's caring for 60 hours a week on top of a full time course!
