scottish Power Electricity Meter

Hi,

I live in London in one bed flat and powered by Scottish Power; I have a digital meter installed in my property with Sottish Power written on it.

I moved to this property in January this year and from then until March, which were peak winter months, I was paying £80 each month and I was in credit (i.e they owed money to me based on actual usage). During these times I used all electric appliances and heating use was at peak.

They visited my property and took meter reading in June and made me a bill of £315/ month based on my electricity usage from March until June!! I was using the same number of appliances and infact not using heating. Therefore the overall costs should have been cheaper but they have rocketed!! Also now I take my readings regularly but meter is running very fast and giving higher readings for summer months when only additional usage was of a very light pedestal fan not used daily but on average 3 hours/day!!

I have spoken with them and they are looking into it. In the meanwhile please advise is someone has been in similar situation and how did they got out...!!!

Thanks.

According to the bills, what were the meter readings in January, March & June? Were any of these estimated?

If you think the meter is now inaccurate, the supplier can arrange a meter check for you. Essentially the install another meter alongside the existing one to see they both read the same. A charge may apply if it is ultimately found no fault exists - about £70 I think :)

Perhaps get yourself an energy monitor to check for yourself how & when you are using your leccy. It won't be as accurate as your proper meter but should give you a good indication. :)

    Thanks.

We took meter reading when moving in, January this year.

Between January and 20 March we used on daily average (including night and day): 24.4 kw-hour/day. Based on actual meter readin on January and 20 March. Winter Time.

Betweem 21 March and 18 June we used on dainly average (including night and day): 65.5kw-hour/day!!! Meter reading on 20 March and 17 June. **This includes summar time!!!!

Since 17 June when meter reader from Scottish Power visited us meter readings have been faster despite our usage has been much lesser than Winter due to no heating used!!!!

    Thanks.

Are you sure you didn't have the heating on?

Even later on when it was about 8 degress outside, it would surprise me if you didn't have any heat on.

If you are using >65kWh per day now, that's a lot of heat and light going somewhere. Any strange smell locally? ;)

As above. 65kWh per day is extremely high for summer consumption, it indicates a substantial device being on 24/7, such as an immersion heater or electric heating. Get an Owl or similar and track down where it's going, circuit by circuit.

Agree with macman - Chesk that the Daytime boost switch on the Immersion heater hasn't been left on 24/7

This will absolutely not cause a drain of 30kWh/day.
    0.5-1kWh/day tops.
To get 30kWh use from a hot water tank, steam needs to be coming out of the vent, or hot water continually run off - about 1000l/day.

Not alone, no, but it's one of the items to check and tick off the list.
Then check for a cannabis farm in the loft next...

Just have one boiler that has electricity on all times. But I believe it works with timer for example I set it for 1 hour boiling to get hot water for use in morning. I am sure its not that as it used to be ON during winter too!!!

In March, April we did use heating but again it was similar to winter season for which we consumed less than 30kw-hour/ day!!!

I don't have any loft etc. I know about all appliances I have. Thanks.

    Thanks.
