If I understand HMRC's penalties system, they categorise errors under 1 of 4 headings:
    Mistake despite taking reasonable care,
    Careless,
    Deliberate, &
    Deliberate & concealed.
As long as you show *how* you arrived at your numbers, using what for logic (print off webpages, e-correspondence, photocopy newspaper articles etc), you can show you are trying to take reasonable care. Which, as I understand it, is not subject to penalties.
If you are spooked by a form, find a lawyer &/or accountant you can afford & get along with, for that form.
All the best, amidst the grief.

Being of the view that my mother was overcharged by her solicitors for their will services and knowing that a large chunk of money was going to have to go to HMRC in IHT we decided to go DIY.

The forms looked daunting but they are fairly straight forward once you get going - the one daunting aspect was finding the money to pay the IHT. However just shy of the 6 months anniversary, the IHT has been paid, we have probate, all the cash funds are in our Executor's account and we have a potential buyer for the house.
