Smart Tv (Samsung) /Tivo Box

Wondered if anyone has that combination & can use the TV remote to operate the Box? yes, the remote sensor thingy is plugged in, but my VM area is not even on the list, it has to be set to Sky.

Are you looking for the codes that allows your Tivo remote to control the Samsung? (volume etc)

Your post suggests you are looking to do it the other way round and use your Samsung TV remote to control the Tivo.

I am sure that you will have already done the google searches but have you been on the VM forums page where there is loads of info on remotes/tivos etc. http://community.virginmedia.com/

I very much doubt that the Samsung TV remote will control the TIVO at all - from memory besides any other issues (such as the Samsung remote likely lacking buttons for the TIVO's functions), cable boxes in the UK tend to use an IR control set that is more closely related to the standard for communication between Computers (anyone remember the IR serial port common on some laptops and a lot of PDA's before bluetooth?), than the standard used for consumer remote controls*.

The TIVO remote can likely control the volume for the TV with relative ease (and possibly turn it on/off as well), as iirc all the NTL/BY/VM digital STB remotes have had the "all for one" style "enter a code" to let them control the TV volume (and usually power I think).

Normally the only way to control both the TV and cable box fully with a single remote is to get a good third party all in one - something like the Harmony series from Logitech** that let you set them up on your computer so you can actually assign buttons with relative ease (no pressing a dozen keys to program a button on the remote to do something other than it's default action).

I personally use a Harmony 555 to control my TV/Blu-ray player, Cable box and it's a god send after trying various cheap all in ones (both the "one4all" brand, and some "store brand" ones), as about 15 minutes with it connected to my PC and it was set up to turn everything on/off as needed and switch between things like the TV's input, and the surround sound systems input (whilst letting me personalise some of the buttons for specific extra functions - ie the channel up/down became TV volume when watching DVD's to allow me mute the surround sound on stereo discs and use the TV's speakers).
I've yet to find a remote the Harmony series can't replace, and they're normally very good at adding new codes to their DB if someone can't find it in their already.

If you're interested in the likes of the Harmony, I think Logitechs site has a page where you can basically try out the setup for what you would need and it lists what models of their remote you'd need (basically it runs you through the setup program for their remotes so you enter the model of TV etc).

On a side note, if you've got an Iphone, or Android (and I think some blackberry and other brand/os smart phones), sometimes you can get apps for them which will let them work as a universal remote control - but it requires them to have an IR port, which is getting rare now as bluetooth and wifi are standard now and replace most of the reasons for having an IR port (IE connecting remotely to a computer).

*At one point you could get software apps which would let you control your TV etc via your laptops IR port, or if you had one, an IR serial device for the PC as it was relatively simple to do.

**They're not cheap, a 5 device one costs about £40 from memory, but you can get them in sales cheaper.

^^On some of the new Samsung TV's you get a IR receiver when you first set them up in order to allow the TV to control various boxes. You get the option of various makes and the likes of Virgin/Sky etc.

I used to use it on my Humax Freesat box but it was next to useless so went back to the original remote.
