Dog Scooting (Not Anal Sacs)

Options
Hi all,

My dog was scooting, so I emptied his anal sacs myself (which ive done for years, not pleasant but worth doing yourself). He was still scooting the next day so took him off to the vets where she checked them over. They were empty. She said they may just be irritated still and would clear up in 3 to 4 days. This was on 09/08/13.

1 Week later I take him back as hes still doing it. She checked him out again and again said theres nothing wrong. No worms, sacs empty. She doesnt know what the matter is. She checked his skin to see if he any irritation from mites or fleas etc, again nothing. So she gave him an anti-inflamitory injection but basically said theres nothing wrong. This was on Friday 16/08/13.

Yet still today hes scooting and trying to nibble down there and seems umcomfortable.

Does anyone else have any ideas what this could be, or should I try a different vets? Im not looking for Veterinary advice, just an idea to point me in the correct direction as I dont like seeing him uncomfartable and all I find on google is anal sacs.

Thanks for reading

    Oooh!

I have the same problem (or rather my Poodle does!).

About 10 minutes after each meal, he becomes really bothered by his bottom. He yelps in pain and goes mad trying to nibble at his back legs, around his hip joint. Lasts about an hour but it's distressing to see him so uncomfortable. His anal sacks are empty (the groomer does it for £3) and he's been to the vet about it a couple of times now with no result. No skin condition, x-rays are all fine (cost me a fortune!)

Because it's ONLY after he eats, Ive come to the conclusion it must be something to do with his insides. He had a bad castration about 18 months ago - the Op went badly, they "lost" the vessel and had to open him right up abdominally to put it right. He lost a lot of blood and was at the vet an extra couple of days but the vet says its unlikely to be to do with all that.... Well, he never had a problem BEFORE all that kicked off! Maybe they tied something to a wrong something? Or maybe theres a lot of scar tissue?

Does anyone have any thoughts for me or the OP?

Nonnatus, could it be a food allergy if it's soon after eating?

Gonzo, maybe he needs a more thorough rectal exam? Has he had antibiotics in case there's an infection somewhere?

Poor thing. If he was mine I would use some Vaseline for a few days or even Sudacream. If that didnt help then i would be asking Vet for further investigations.

I hope you get to the bottom (sorry for pun) of it soon xxx

  • Maisie had this trouble after the last time hers were emptied (need done around every 6 weeks in the summer - but OK the whole winter so vet things hers is likely to be allergy related)

Anyway, she was back several times to get them checked - and same as your dog, they were always emptied

Finally the vet suggested a few days on painkillers - she had Metacam for 5 days (and didn't scoot from the first dose!) and was absolutely fine afterwards :D

Seems that when they were emptied it must have made them sore so she was scooting due to pain from the sacs (not them needing emptied) - and her scooting / vet trying to empty them again just ended up in a never ending circle

I agree, my thoughts were to give him antibiotics. I had a female collie who needed her glands emptying on a regular basis and she needed AB on one occasion as she wouldn't stop scooting

    Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. I forgot to mention that the vet said that there doesnt seem to be an infection.

May be unrelated, but im not a fan of coincidense, when he went for a poo tonight he seemed to be constipated, or may be just struggled to pass it. He also yelped slightly. He seems fine now, but im back off to the vets in the morning to ask for a more detailed check whats going on.

    Finger crossed

You could try putting a handful of porridge oats in his food. Gentler than bran, but might help move things if he does need a bit of extra help. With the added bonus that mutt used to love the taste.
(Slight downside- goes everywhere if they sneeze.)
Hope you get sorted in the morning.

Grass seeds don't just get stuck in ears so a thorough inspection around dogs anus and underside of tail, with a magnifying glass might do the trick, not an easy thing to do but if you already clear his anal sacs, it'll be a breeze for you, other than that I can only think of mites (harvester mites are around this time of year) Hope this is helpful to you.
