so basically its quicker to collect receipts, write down/type into spreadsheet your spending rather than type in a 4-6 digit pin on an app and get an up to the minute balance?

I just saw a pig fly.

It is more accurate to work it out yourself.

Transactions can often take several days to reach your bank statement.

If you're desperate to use an app, use one like financisto where you can record your own transactions, rather than hope that all retailers will debit transactions immediately. It's your job to know how much money you have, rather than anyone else.

nationwide and rbs are instant. you dont know the exact retailer details, but the balance is spot on after seconds.

Only if the retailer processes the transaction immediately. From experience I can say that Amazon and Tesco transactions often don't appear for a couple of days.
