    Do you have any business experience, buying in to one of the bigger franchises can give you an instant (though hard work) business where everyone is happy. Look at the number of Accountants and Lawyers that have McDs for example. Lower end stuff you should simply run away from. There are a few basics in running any business that can easily be replicated, so no point in buying the book just to run something that will already enjoy recognisable branding, footfall or ease of purchase. I have friends who are into the bigger brands (all fast food!) and manage them remotely now. Another came out of his parcel delivery franchise (much, much too hard work) and now makes a living taking any run of the mill business and creating a franchisable business template around it and selling off individual and master franchises. A bit like in the gold rush, he doesn't pan for nuggets, he makes his money selling the pans.
