Tax credit overpayment - credit search ?

Hi all:

Have a couple of questions re tax credits overpayment.

(1) Do they let you pay back overpayment in instalments ? and if so, how many months do they generally let you pay it back over?

(2) Do they do a credit search if you want to pay in instalments ?

I was overpaid by a considerable amount. Their fault although they are arguing about that. They are letting me pay back interest free over 10 years which is apparently the maximum period they can spread it over without going into detailed financial investigation of your circumstances. They didn't do a credit search just asked me some questions about incomings and outgoings, then negotiated!

Thanks Julie, I was a bit paranoid because we are in late stages of buying a flat, and extra credit searches are a no no during that process..
