How to make a hand warmer cushion
Chuck out that old hot-water bottle and get toasty with a pretty hand warmer instead – great for sitting with on your tummy or back too.
When the weather is horrid outside and you’re spending more days indoors, why not try this simple, charming craft idea? It’s easy to make, as well as a lovely way to recycle a favourite old skirt or dress, and it’ll keep you snuggly.
PLUS – it makes a charming homemade gift idea...
You will need:
1. A largish piece of cotton fabric (do not use synthetic fabrics as they could melt)
2. Scissors
3. Pins
4. Sewing machine
5. Wooden spoon
6. 1kg wheat
7. Lavender oil (optional)
8. Toilet roll core
9. Needle and thread
Method:- Cut out two 30cm x 20cm rectangular pieces of fabric.
- Place the pieces of fabric on top of one another, right sides facing.
- Pin all four edges to hold the pieces together. Leaving a 1cm seam allowance, sew around the bag. Leave a 6cm opening on one of the long sides to pour the wheat into. For extra strength, sew around the bag again.
- Turn the bag right side out by pushing the fabric through the opening. Use the end of a wooden spoon to push out the corners.
- Place the wheat into a bowl or cup and sprinkle with lavender oil. Place the toilet roll core into the hole in the bag and pour in the wheat.
- Pin the opening in the bag closed and stitch by hand using the needle and thread.
- When you’re ready to try it out, place the hand warmer cushion into the microwave together with a cup of water, to prevent the wheat from drying out. Microwave on high for 2 minutes.
