my hubby just rang to say that the wasp exterminator has been in where he works (outside) and has killed two wasp nests because they are classed as 'pests'. The nests were out of the way and nobody was ever stung. My husband has four stings because the dying wasps were trying to protect their queen and nest. It really annoys me that wasps are killed when there's no reason - I have three fruit trees in my garden and each year my gardens are full to brimming with wasps and hornets who nest nearby and I have never been stung, ever, despite them walking on my skin and clothing and flying around me on a daily basis. They really don't want to sting unless they are threatened and in my view are very misunderstood. Fair enough if there are children, but I think it's such a shame. They are such interesting creatures. We went away a few weeks ago and stopped for a pork sandwich. A few wasps came by, attracted by the smell of the meat. My hubby held a piece of pork in his hand and two wasps came and cut off pieces with their jaws and flew off with it between their legs, amazing and wonderful creatures.

Just thought this might be of interest to any nature loving fellow compers xxx

Not been keen on wasps since I was lying peacefully by a pool on a sun lounger in Corfu and one flew over and stung my big toe softpad! You have never seen anyone run as quickly to put my toe in the water.:rotfl:

  • I am not a wasp lover either sheils. When my DS2 was a about 14 months he was sat in his high chair eating and a wasp flew in and stung his tongue.

His tongue stung swelled to an enormous size and the only way we could help him from chocking was to put small pieces of ice into his mouth and race to the hospital for an injection. It was frightening at the time.

    Thank you :A's xx

Must admit didn't know what to do with meself when it kicked in - so painful :(

You have my sympathies elle :A- suffered on and off for years with back probs (due mainly to accidents thru the years from youngish age ) - the spasms are blooming awful but thankfully, touch wood, it comes and goes. Dread it though when I feel it coming on. I do feel for you - I hope any treatment you have will help you and make you feel more comfortable. xx

Cold/wet here sheils also - have put extra layers on today and snuggled up on settee. Feel tired today after not much sleep so will prob nod off at some point later on this afternoon!!!

Only seen a couple of wasps in the garden this year softpad - most unusual!

Just checked bbc.co.uk/news/magazine and found info entitled: Who, what, why: Where are all the wasps?

Part quote: Numbers are low so far this year because of a huge decline in the wasp population in 2012, say experts. That drop was the result of fluctuating temperatures earlier in the year.

Makes for interesting reading. Unusual amount of bees/butterflies here (which is wonderful) but no sign of ladybirds :(
