The internet was off for 5 minutes today - well, 40% of it anyway.

Yep, Google had an almost complete failure today, so all their services came offline for a few minutes. You only realise quite how big Google are when you see that network traffic dipped by 40% over that time. Whoa, that's proper big. As their DNS service came offline too, that may account for a load of that 40% of course, other sites became unavailable for some users, but still, wow, 40% is pretty huge.

At their last shareholder report figures their revenue is $108k/minute, so it cost then half a million bucks in five minutes. Pretty big outage.

It happened last July too...scary to think how much power everyone has given to one company and their effective monopoly isn't it?

If Google was offline for 5 (five) minutes  during one single day , I do hope that you are thinking of suing them for every penny they've got. :rotfl:

You're lucky you managed to catch this - you might have been making a cup of coffee or tea while the outage occurred! :(

    it's not Googles fault!

The NSA was working as fast as it could to install the sniffer box on Googles Internet backbone!

Probably paddrg got this from The Register, whose story is worth a read if only for the amusement value...

"Even the hardened tech veterans here at Vulture Annex in San Francisco had trouble figuring out what to do during the outage. One stalwart reporter announced that he would try using Bing, at which brows were furrowed. Another asked the question that was doubtless echoed all across the West Coast: "Can we go home, then?" "

Did indeed. And I noticed the outage, I was working away at the time, quite a relief it wasn't just me, but millions and millions of people :-)
