regardless of who the op needs to talk to I'd still say you had a job offer to the person listed as the reference instead of them asking you why you never mentioned it

The best course of action is to tell the person that you might apply for the odd job here and there, so if they get a reference request its not a huge shock.

Often you find that they will ignore your named person and just ask the HR dept anyway...

  • Why would you do this? They want a week's notice, they get a week's notice. If they wanted more, they would ask for more. When they say 'thanks for handing your notice in, we only require you to work the week, will you be kicking yourself for losing a week's work?

Just, wait for your offer, and hand your notice in with the notice period that they stipulate in their contract.

Tell them before, and you don't get it - again, you will be kicking yourself.

Managers aren't so shocked that they will have palpitations when someone hands their notice period in. They will cope.

This is what was worrying me, I dont want to tell them too soon as its still 5 weeks away and if they want to be difficult, I could lose a months work though I really doubt they would do that, its still a possibility as they know I'm no longer an investment and ill be leaving soon anyway.

I'm also thinking when my team leader receives the reference, he will have to tell his superior.

    Quick background.

I'm in permanent employment, a job came up at another company which I really wanted to go for and I applied. Somehow got an interview, sat before a panel and was interviewed, I was pretty sure I didn't get it but I did (YAY).

Now I dont start till October, they will be requesting a reference from my current team leader who knows I am leaving for oct. When the references have been received by the company I will soon be working for, I will get my start date.

Till I get my start date, I cant really hand in my notice because I dont know exaclly when I start at the other place.

I dont want to tell upper management because its 5 weeks away and I dont want them being difficult with me (Not that they would, but dont want to risk it), but if my team leader is doing my reference, im guessing they will have to find out.

I dont want to burn any bridges or anything like that, do I tell them next week, or should I wait till two weeks before I intend in leaving (Mid sept) before I hand in my notice?

Hand your notice in, at the correct time, depending on your notice period. That's why they have a notice period so that you can hand it in at the correct time.

Your team leader might not get the reference, if he does then he will have to hand it to HR to respond.

Naa, he will be doing it himself, otherwise the reference would be asking for me to give details of HR rather than my team leader or manager specifically. Also considering the reference will be asking about my day-to-day performance and ability to do the job, I reckon someone who knows me will have to fill it out but we will see next week when it arrives.

If you tell them they reference request is on it way and they say ok you can leave in a week or go now then if you are good terms how bad does that look to the other staff and I am sure no sane person would do that.

You have to tell them at some point but as you only have to give a week I am assuming as you say you would lose a month their notice is also a month?

True, it would look very bad and they would have a tough time explaining that one away.

I'm not sure if im understanding the second paragraph properly, the notice they give if they want rid of you is 1 week also, so if they said "ok leave", I would be unemployed for a month as i dont start till October.

ok so like you said you are worried if you tell them you have a new job BEFORE you want to resign you could lose the job you have now meaning its 4 weeks till you start the new one?

I start in the first week of October. If I told them now and they gave me a weeks notice, I would be out of work forfor 5 weeks. That wouldn't happen though because to be frank, we are currently understaffed. We have a new person coming in but it will be a while before they are trained and ready.

I'm just thinking worst case scenario
  • You are overthinking worst case scenario.

Hand your notice in - using the notice period that your employer stipulated that you give. Do it once you have a contract and after they have taken up references. End of.
