HELP! When do I hand in my notice.

Quick background.
I'm in permanent employment, a job came up at another company which I really wanted to go for and I applied. Somehow got an interview, sat before a panel and was interviewed, I was pretty sure I didn't get it but I did (YAY).
Now I dont start till October, they will be requesting a reference from my current team leader who knows I am leaving for oct. When the references have been received by the company I will soon be working for, I will get my start date.
Till I get my start date, I cant really hand in my notice because I dont know exaclly when I start at the other place.
I dont want to tell upper management because its 5 weeks away and I dont want them being difficult with me (Not that they would, but dont want to risk it), but if my team leader is doing my reference, im guessing they will have to find out.
I dont want to burn any bridges or anything like that, do I tell them next week, or should I wait till two weeks before I intend in leaving (Mid sept) before I hand in my notice?

Depends how much notice you have to give but DO NOT wait to tell them (not resign) because they will be calling you in the office to say they have had a reference request!
You say you want a chat and give them the heads up that a request will be coming etcWe’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Hand your notice in, the amount of days before you want to leave, depending on your notice period. Do not do it before. They stipulate how much notice they want, so give it to them.Sanctimonious Veggie. GYO-er. Seed Saver. Get in.0

If your team leader knows you are planning to leave, it is not unlikely that more senior management already know that you are planning to leave.
You don't want to hand in your notice until your offer of employment is confirmed after they have received satisfactory references. It is not so much that you have a start date than it is that you have an unconditional offer. (At the moment no doubt your offer is conditional on the receipt of references.)
I take it that your contract requires you to give two weeks' notice.
Remember that your notice starts the day after you give it, however early in the day you do so. So if you were to want to start your new job on Tuesday, 1 October, hand in your notice on Monday, 16 September.0 -
Tell your referee that you have had a an offer of a new position and that they will receive a reference request.
When you get an unconditional offer or a contract (whichever the new employer does) then give in your notice.
Your notice period will be in your current contract e.g 1 week, 4 weeks, one month.
If you have holiday outstanding and plan to take it to cut short your notice period you might want to find out if your current employer would agree to that.( I work in a service environment and if I could not cover or would have to use expensive agency we would not agree the holiday being taken but pay it in lieu on leaving).
Good luck0 -

Thanks everyone, my team leader knows but the seniors do not know, i know that for sure.
As you say, I cant hand in my notice till I have an unconditional offer as it is currently conditional on them receiving the references.
It's actually 1 weeks notice but I'll give two to give them some extra time to find a new person to replace me.
Do you guys think I should tell management that I will be leaving in October (Though I wont be handing in my notice) or should I wait till I have my unconditional offer?
@spirit, I have used all of my holiday, I'll actually owe 0.5 days so i may lose half days pay.0 -

yes as I have said have a chat with the boss to say you have a job offer and they are writing for a reference as you do not want that to come as a shock and they call you in and say 'what's all this'? etc
Think it depends on who opens the post. If the request is addressed to the team leader and mail is passed to addressees without opening in a general office, then it would be for the team leader to tell more senior management.
However, better to let them know that you are planning on leaving - but first make sure that terms of employment require written notice to be given so that any oral communication is not taken as giving them one week's notice.0 -
reference will be addressed to team leader. I think ill do as suggested, also notice has to be in writing. Thanks guys.0

Just, wait for your offer, and hand your notice in with the notice period that they stipulate in their contract.
Tell them before, and you don't get it - again, you will be kicking yourself.
Managers aren't so shocked that they will have palpitations when someone hands their notice period in. They will cope.Sanctimonious Veggie. GYO-er. Seed Saver. Get in.0 -
