I was under the impression you didn't have to return the goods within seven days or at all in fact? Is this MSE lazy journalism yet again?0

Surely you are not likely to get a refund if you keep the item......0 -

Currently you have to inform the store of your intent to cancel within 7 working days, starting from the day after receipt. Presumably it is this that is changing to 14 calendar days. If not, the article is misleading.
There is also the fact the store must provide you with information about your cancellation rights in a durable medium (i.e. not just a website). If they do not provide you with that information with the order, then your cancellation rights do not end until 7 working days after the receipt of the required information, to a maximum of 3 months and 7 days. Not sure how this is affected.Surely you are not likely to get a refund if you keep the item......
From a legal perspective, they must refund you, then they may choose to claim against you in court to get the money back.
This probably rarely happens in practice.
This seems to have been changed slightly in the new rules, in that the refund must be provided within 14 days of receipt of goods, rather than 30 days regardless.Competition wins: Where's Wally Goody Bag, Club badge branded football, Nivea for Men Goody Bag0 -

Unfortunately, the MSE News item says that one must return the goods within the seven working days:Currently, you have seven working days from when you receive your goods to return items bought "at a distance" – online, via mail order or over the phone. In future, you'll have 14 calendar days instead.0 -
Moving on...is there currently a requirement to return the goods under the DSR and will that change?0

So it looks like there will be a requirement to return the goods - as long as you can prove it was sent, the retailer must refundSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -

Ah ok then. Wasn't aware of that. But then it would never cross my mind not to send something back I was getting a refund for!0 -

14 is the new magic number for DSRs.
14 days to notify of intent to cancel. 14 days from notifying to return the goods. 14 days for retailer to refund.
And the new version also allows the retailers to make a reduction if you fail to take reasonable care and the goods diminish in value due to that failure.
I can see those "goods must be returned unopened and in original packaging" companies rubbing their hands with glee at the last part. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
