birth certificate

what is a full birth certificate. my son has one of the cream coloured ones with red writing , which is all we ever had.
it has full names address at time and occupations but apparently that is the wrong one.

need it for student finance and don't really want to send a passport in post as they won't send it back registered

If it looks like this -
    https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/rosenberg/popups/birthcertificate.htm
then it's the long version and will do for all purposes.

I always thought it was one that was more A4 in size.

Eta. Just looked my sons one, and it has the same info on but goes down the page and not across. I also have a small square one.

    That one isn't life sized - it's a picture!

It's the amount of information that makes the difference between the short form and the long form. To be used as evidence of identity, you usually have to show the long form even though it has written on it "Warning - a certificate is not evidence of identity."
  • Years ago a shortened version was issued if the parents were not married or if there was no father named. Not sure if this is still the case

    I know it's a picture.

What I was saying is my grandparents birth certificates are long and thin. Like the one in your link.My son's is A4 size.
The same information but going down the page not across.

The short version was given for free. You had to pay to get the longer certificate. Nothing to do with paternity.

    Yep thats right.
I had the small free copy until 2 years ago because my dad took me to be registered and hes always been a tight g*t, then cost me £38 to get the longer version!

    I have a short version.

When I got married (abroad) I had to get a copy of the long certificate as they wouldn't accept the short one. I got it from the general register office.
