Mother has taken out credit in my name

Hi there.

Recently I went to open up a new Bank Account and was rejected, due to a low credit rating, which I was not aware of as I maintain regular payments on time to anything I pay out and have no debt, other than student loans. As the branch officer encouraged me to look into what was affecting I discovered that there was countless loans and catalogues taken out under my name, all of which have not been paid back!

a few weeks ago, as the postman came to the door, and I recieved mail, I noticed a letter of debt from a catalogue company which stated I owed them a LOT of money, and upon further investigation found out that it was my mother who has been taking all this credit out in my name. She has racked up an enormous amount of debt in my name, leaving me unable to apply for credit in the nearby future, and also has affected my chances of getting better employment in the future, which as a recent university graduate has got me extremely furious about!

After constant arguments about it, she has shown no remorse over doing it, and I believe she is still doing it, no matter how many times I've warned her to stop it, as I am still recieving countless emails from payday loans companies offering me credit, which I have no interest in. I know she's my mum, but my credit history is now completely !!!!ed, and I fear if she doesn't stop, then my life in future will forever be ruined, thanks to her greed.

Any advice would be appreciated, as I'm losing the will to live with this!

Thanks.

You need to contact the police and report her.

She has defrauded you and this will be the only way to start to rectify the matter.

Or you do nothing and pay her debts back - as you are deemed responsible for them. And she will never stop if you take this course of action as she can get away with it.

On the basis that she has shown no remorse, report her to the police for fraud - you need to contact all the companies and make it clear that you have been the victim of identity theft (which will be more difficult if you don't report to the police as the companies concerned won't otherwise believe you).

You're not the first person on here to be treated so badly by a parent - you have no choice - dob her in.

As harsh as it sounds... you may need to report it to the police as it is, without sugar coating it, fraud or obtaining goods and services by deception. I know she is your mum which makes it really difficult but due to the fact that she shows no remorse or stopping with this illegal and damaging behaviour she needs to be held fully accountable for her actions. This would no doubt cause enormous friction and animosity within the family but she really does need to take ownership of what she has done and face up to it and put it right. If you can prove that these debts were racked up fraudulently, you should be cleared of them. I'm probably not being too helpful but this does need addressing and she needs to take full responsibility for getting you into this position.

Does she live at the same address as you ?

Your only course of action is to report this to the police as fraud, you can then endeavour to take the steps to rebuild your credit file.

Your mother has obviously hasn't given you a second thought in following this course of action so likewise you should report her and let her suffer the consequences !!

To get this resolved you will need to report your mother to the police for the fraud.

Then you need to work through all the creditors writing to each one to state that the account was opened fraudulently by your mother and that the police have been informed and are investigating. Ask them to investigate and to put a hold on the debt whilst they do so.

To stop any further attempts from her to take out even more credit look into CIFAS protective registration. Its for identity theft cases such as these and makes it much harder for anyone to take out fraudulent credit in your name (effectively any new lender will have to make further checks that it is you applyling and be supplied with a password you have set). There is a small annual fee but it sounds like it will definitely be worth it in your case.

Although if there are lots of unpaid debts then she is probably struggling to get any new credit in your name now.

Do you live with her? is she accessing your own post?

Yes she lives at the same address as me.

I've also come to the realisation that she may be intercepting my mail too due to this. A lot of times I've went to see if I have mail, she has often told me she has "accidentally" opened up a few of my mail which has been addressed to me and not her, and due to having completely different names, I'm positive that she's been intercepting my mail to ensure I don't find out about her constant thievery, I think being able to catch the mail before her was how I had managed to find out about it all.

Can you add a thumb print?

How can I add a thumb print?

Recently, newspapers have talked about lenders only processing applications for credit where the applicant has given a copy of their thumbprint along with their name and address.

If you want to do this, you'll need a copy of your credit report. Once you have it, write a notice of correction saying that you want to use this process and include the reference number you'll see on your report. We'll then add your notice to your statement so that all future lenders can see it. That's it - you don't need to send us a copy of your thumbprint.

Please bear in mind that although we'll show your notice of correction to the lenders, it's their responsibility to act on it.

If you want to go ahead and write a notice for this, here's what we'd suggest you write:

I, (your name) of (your address), declare that when my signature is needed for any financial product or service I'll authenticate it with my thumbprint. If I do not do this, the service or product should be withheld. Any application without a thumbprint should be considered fraudulent. I'll inform you in writing, signed and thumbprinted, if this changes.
Still rolling rolling rolling...... :) <
SIGNATURE - Not part of post

Is there an alternative address, like a friend where you could have all mail addressed to you delivered? At least then you would know what is happening - BUT AS ME AND OTHERS HAVE SAID - NO-ONE (SUCH AS THE CREDITORS) WILL BELIEVE YOU UNLESS YOU REPORT THIS TO THE POLICE

How awful, did you previously have a good relationship with your mother? Is this out of character for her?

Does sound like there's no alternative but to contact the police I'm afraid. I'd be beyond furious as well.
  • The only way you can salvage your credit record and have the debt removed from your name is to report the matter to the police. Your mother will be liable for the debt and any default etc will be removed from your credit file.
