Silicone is certainly the correct answer to what substance.

What colour depends a little on what the rest of the kitchen is done in.

Our current place is rented so wasnt our choice but the work surface is a black granite with the same material being used for the splashbacks & windowsills. Where you get the joins they've used a black silicone

Dont use clear silicone, it looks grubby after about 3 weeks, well mine did anyway!
  • I watched someone do the silicone the other day.

They put it on, to be honest it looked terribly wibbly wobbly. Then he wet his finger and swiftly moved his finger along it. A perfect silicone seal.

By the way I would use white. I would be worried the clear would get dirt in it

Silicone, purely as you avoid issues with grout cracking as the surfaces will expand/contract at different rates. :)

And never clear. Particularly if you're a perfectionist!

I'd stick some putty in it.
  • Every kitchen I have had has been white silicone

White silicone vote here. It's what I now have in my kitchen after all the grout that my ex had originally put in cracked and mostly fell out as the work-surfaces settled!

Another vote for white silicone and a wet finger - plus a handy cloth to wipe aforementioned finger on regularly!
Don't buy cheap DIY own brand silicone either. Get "anti-mould" or similar for bathrooms and kitchens.
Also, don't be tempted to fill holes in woodwork with it - you can't paint over it.

Grout is inflexible, so will crack if there is any movement.
