I recently MADE myself find how to type a character thus ½ instead of typing half. This has bugged me for years as I'd once had a website which allowed a quick copy & paste.
But within the system it can be done, go to Programmes>Accessories>System Tools>Character Map and there you are, simply select the one you're after and copy.

Good mention - Character Map is hidden away but very useful.
Easier ways to open are:
Windows Vista / Windows 7
Type "character" in the Start Menu search box and it should find it
Windows 8 (Desktop)
Go to the Run box (Windows key + R) and type "charmap"0 -

Sadly in programs like Word the Alt-Codes from that website are not entirely correct.
Alt+171 does give ½, though, but Alt+172 is ¼ and Alt+243 is ¾...0
