Weekend in London with £100 spending money

Help.

I've used some holiday inn points to book a hotel in London this weekend, and some other savings to go to see les mix with my wife on Saturday night.

We are stopping in earls court Friday & Saturday, but only have £100 spends to cover foods and other activities.

Any suggestions on special offers for foods?

Ash

Does that include your travel as well in London?

There are plenty of free things- Natural History museum, science museum etc. Parks. Mooch around Covent Garden, Camden etc

There are usually special offer vouchers on here for restaurant chains however a lot exclude saturdays. You can pick up cheap food from some of the market type stalls as well in places like Camden which could cover lunch if needed.

Does hotel include breakfast? We tend to find with a decent late breakfast we can skip lunch and just go for a decent dinner somwhere.

    Hi

I can probably cover tube tickets outside of the £100.

Unfortunately, because I'm using holiday inn points they don't give you breakfast :( and to pay for it would cost too much.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Hi, I would pack some food from home and take a travel kettle for your room.
Last time I did this I had bag of apples, ritz crackers, breakfast bars, crisps and sandwiches for first day. I drink water from my travel bottle.

I have also taken on a ferry HM sausage sandwiches for breakfast.

Out and about buy supermarket food and eat outdoors. Cheaper than a cafe.

    Happy holidays....

  • Hi Ash, I was in London a couple of weeks ago and all the food was massively overpriced.Luckily I took a days worth in my backpack and thats what I would advise you to do.
Obviously you cant take all the food for a weekend but you can take drinks, and snacks for breakfast, lunch etc. At night I would go somewhere cheap like Pizza Hut or Burger King.
You could always get pie and mash fairly cheaply.

If you're travelling in by train then some of the 241 food offers are available at weekends (e.g. Covent Garden Grill SAturday afternoons) although would probably still take a big chunk of your budget.

But like Manda says there are so many free things to do that, as you say your tube travel doesn't need to come out of the budget then you only need to cover food.

Personally, I'd find out whether the nearest Tesco or Sainsbury's to the hotel is and spend £3 or so on one of therir Sandwich / crisp / drink 'meal deals' for lunch - or consider taking your own sandwiches or snacks with you. That way one meal out each day should do you. Or look for pubs like Wetherspoons, that are reasonably priced.
  • It looks like the hotel is on North End Road with all the cheap shops & eateries you might need as you go south towards Fulham Broadway

Take a bottle of water each in with you to Les Mis as drinks at the theatre are very expensive and it does get hot. I actually saw a couple with small bottles of wine and plastic glasses (as they don't allow glasses).

There are Wetherspoons pubs near the theatre for cheaper meals and drinks. Wetherspoons also do cheap breakfasts. They often do deals meal nd drink if you eat between 2- 5pm

Also have a look at the site deals.

I go to London a lot and yes eating out can be expensive. One thing me and OH do if we are staying in a hotel (we try and stay in an apartment) that doesn't provide breakfast is to find a cheapish but clean looking caf! and have a cooked breakfast (whether it's the full works or something like egg on toast) and then we don't usually want a lunch. You can often get breakfast fairly cheap and then you only have to think about an evening meal.

Lunch can work out expensive. Often just a sandwich and a coffee can cost as much or close to a meal.

We were in London a couple of weekeds ago. We shopped in Sainsburys Local and Tesco Express - these seemed to be on every corner. We had breakfast in our room with food bought the night before and a nice lunchtime picnic in Kensington Gardens. Enjoy!

Edit: Also over three days you'll probably be better off with oyster cards

I live and work in London and yes, it can be expensive but there's plenty to do that's cheap and even free :) Most of the museums and galleries are free - V&A, Science Museum and Natural History Museum over in South Ken, National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery in Trafalgar Square or Tate Modern and Tate Britain. There's usually something going on at the South Bank too. Check out Time Out (available on-line) for free events and cheap eats.

Les Mis is on near Soho - there's usually some cheap eats to be had 'round in Chinatown if you fancy a bit of a treat that's not going to break the bank. If you're a coffee fan, head to Algerian Coffee Stores in Old Compton Street for an espresso (90p!) or cappuccino (£1.10) - unheard of prices in the West End and much nicer than chain coffee. Then just bimble around taking in the sights :) Have a good trip!
