    I find that as soon as you develop a theory about these things, something puts the kybosh on it.

    I have a regular circuit comprising locations in SE Asia (principally Vietnam), Far East (principally Taiwan) and Europe (principally Germany). Less so the US.

    Just as I get used to a particular card not giving me trouble, it fails. Likewise a previously troublesome card starts working flawlessly.

    I'm still vaguely impressed that they work at all. Broadly speaking I can pitch up to some place I've never been before, in a totally different jurisdiction. In the middle of the night I can shove a bit of plastic into a hole and within seconds it decides it's OK to give me a few bob. And at minimal cost too.
