I have had one of these emails tonight but I think it may be a phishing email. If you hover your mouse over any of the links given, they do not start with bt.com, which they should do if they are really being sent by BT.
I'm phoning BT in the morning to see if this is genuine or hoax.

Ah, I remember now why I've been paying £1.50+ a month for over 8 years to BT.
It was to retain POP3 access to my email account - they stopped providing that for free a while after I left them.
Fair enough, I wouldn't have expected them to maintain it forever. It's next to nothing a month so I don't mind paying, though I agree it's not strictly MSE.0 -
Bigger issue here is they signed up members for free @btinternet membership as recently as 2005 without you have any commitment to buy BT services. The site was ad sponsored thus helping them support the free service. The new service would appear to be ad free thus no revenue stream. Gmail already charge business users so a previous poster along with the rest us may get a shock in a few years time when Gmail start recouping their earlier start up costs and bill us for email. Let the MP in charge of Communications Mr Ed Vaisey know of this issue, he's there to make laws happen to protect email addresses being abused. His address is vaizeye@parliament.uk0

£144 over that 8 years then...No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Amazing - a company wanting to charge someone for a service they want to receive.
What will private enterprise think of next?"There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -
As a BT shareholder, I'd be complaining if they didn't charge. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

but still not nothing which is what you'd pay if you chose one of the multitude of free email accounts.0
