Living on the South Circular Road (Living on a busy road)

I am looking at a house on the South Circular in London. It's a busy, noisy road.

Would you buy a house on a busy road? The upside is its a nice, big house - though probably much bigger than we need realistically. If it wasn't on the S circular I could never afford it.

I also have the option of a house on a quiet road nearby which is very nice, is cheaper, and is closer to the station, but is also a fair bit smaller. Not sure whether the noise will compensate for the extra size?

Do you live on a busy road, and would you do it again?

  • I currently live on a fairly busy road - not as busy as the S Circular though - and I hate it. I find that traffic noise keeps me awake and makes it hard to watch tv (particularly in the warm weather if you want to have a window open). It also makes the place really dusty and the windows are constantly dirty making the place seem very dark. Thankfully, i'm renting so there's an end in sight!

Having lived here, I'd never buy on a busy road and would rather have a smaller house on a quiet road so that I can enjoy a bit of peace and quiet in my home. We're house hunting now and before arranging to view houses I drive down the road, park up, switch the engine off and listen.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

Be prepared for emergency vehicles with their sirens on throughout the night.

If the traffic is bad on the SC you could end up blocked in your house
  • I live on a main road and it's hell. The amount of dust is incredible. I have terrible allergies, and after a day there is a fine layer of dust on everything. I would never live near a main road again, it's awful.
  • I wouldn't buy!

Having driving round the North Circ for many years I always wondered why anyone in their right mind would live in the houses to be honest. No chance of keeping your windows clean. The noise & smell just for starters!

Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.
  • Since I haven't got a car myself, then the answer is "No". Busy roads are my idea of hell and I do know that particular road and make that "Hell multiplied to the power of ...etc".

If I did have a car myself then I'd think about it (after all...I would be creating "car noise" myself, so I would feel differently about it).

Money , have you ever been on the road in question ? , you have said this before , it does not matter if one is a car driver/owner , in relation to wanting to live near a busy road , please , get that clear in your head

and I'm honest enough with myself to know that if I played a part in creating car noise then I couldn't justifiably complain about it.

So because you might have contributed in some way to traffice noise , you would happily part with £££££££££££££££££££££££ on a house on a busy main road , as a kind of self punishment ?

Do you ever find yourself punching your own face?
