If you do get judgement don't bother sending bailiffs in, he's probably got nothing. Maybe in a year or two he'll decide to buy a car or get a job or something, which is when you can hit him with enforcement.
  • I was thinking that instead of going for judgement now and getting payment enforced through bailiffs if the person concerned gets a job/car/money in the future it might be better to delay the legal action totally until this time, especially as they might think that you have given up trying to get the money for the damage.

If they know that they have an outstanding debt that can be satisfied by bailiffs, they might well end up getting their partner (assuming that they have one) to buy everything in their name, thus making them untouchable by the bailiffs.
Once a court has decided that the debt is owed, any attempt to then transfer the possessions to another person would be seen as an attempt to avoid paying the court order and the goods could still be seized.
