I currently have an N reg Mondeo with 151k on the clock. car owes me nothing as no fault accident claims have covered original purchase price. Has been totally reliable but I suppose it must be nearing the end though no sign of it yet. I was hoping to get at least another 50k from it

BUT

a guy up the road from me is selling his T reg Rover 620 SLi auto
wants £500 for it, 67k on the clock

research suggests:
- its just a bit more expensive for insurance than than my my current one (say +£100 per year)
- "road tax" is the same
- per the net the MPG is 28
- 11.6 seconds to 60mph so overtaking will be risky

I don't need to chnage my car at the moment but is this too good to miss?
Cons in my mind - I had assumed my next car would be more modern and so be in cheaper road tax, its an auto so driving style will need to change, MPH looks horrendous, its only 4 door (have always had hatchbacks to now)

I really don't think I want it but what say you?

PS when I buy a car i expect to finish by taking it to a scrap yard after 7 - 10 years. I've had the mondeo since 34k and the vauxhall before that did me for 110K

I would stick with what you have, I would rather have a Mondeo over a Rover and besides like you say there is nothing wrong with your Mondeo at the moment but its your call, the car you have now is old but the other car isn't much newer.

You don't need or want to change a reliable car for one that is:

    - slow
    - more expensive to run
    - an unknown quantity

I think you answered your own question! :)
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

It is a 2.0 Honda engine-bomb proof. I had one and loved it. I too got 28mpg just from town driving but nearer 40mpg on the motorway.

Hang on to the Mondeo. The Rover 800s were old-fashioned when they came out new, were slow, heavy, unreliable and about as nimble as a barge. Just about everything on them can and will go wrong, the saving grace is their weight as you will get more from the scrappy for them.

    Avoid.
Auto boxes are a liability on bangernomics cars. They waste fuel, sap power and when they go that's the end of the line for the car.

    Better the devil you know.

However the 600 was hailed as a revelation when it came out.
