Hi everyone
My daughter recently divorced is having to cut down on her outgoings she is talking about going to evening and weekend calls (she works full time), broadband and changing from Sky to freeview box. Can anyone please let us know how she could do this, what to watch out for and what companies we could approach.
Many thanks
Sue

You don't need to approach any companies to have Freeview, you just need a working aerial and a TV with a Freeview tuner (all of them). But if she already has Sky, then by far the most economic way to do it is simply to cancel the Sky TV sub and she will then still receive all the FTA channels (Freesat from Sky) via the existing dish and box. However the Sky+ functions will no longer operate. If she wants PVR functions then the best option is to buy a Freesat PVR (Humax). A straight box swap, nothing else required.
The phone and broadband account could remain with Sky and she can downgrade/tailor them to whatever suits her best, subject to minimum term.No free lunch, and no free laptop

If she is ok Sky with TV, Broadband and Telephone then she could cancel the sky tv package and keep broadband and telephone. It will cost around £15 for the phone line rental plus calls, and £10 a month for broadband, so total £25 + calls charged outside of weekends and daytime, free weekend and evening calls to 01 and 02 numbers.
A better option would be to pay the line rental in advance for the year at £10 a month (£120) and save £50. Then add Sky Talk Anytime UK for £5 and broadband for £10, free calls anytime to 01, 02, 0845 and 0870. Total £25 a month and no call charges to worry about except if you call mobiles and premium numbers.
Cancelling the Sky TV package will mean she will still have all the freeview channels available like bbc, itv, ch5, ch4 and about 20-30 other channels, viewable through her existing sky box, she wont have to change a thing technology wise.0 -
Thank you very much for answering. I will put the options to her.

If I have a Sky+ HD box and then cancel the sky tv package, what features will/won't work after cancellation please?
Recording function? Pause/rewind live tv?If I had a pound for every time I didn't play the lottery...0 -
Have a look at this: http://www.humaxdirect.co.uk/product.asp?ProdRef=10105
Yes, all the sorts of things you've had on Sky. I've got the Freeview version and this is an amazing piece of kit.0 -

No PVR functions will work once you cancel your sub, nor will you be able to access recorded programmes. Basically, the decryption software ceases to operate. You can pay Sky £10 pm to enable it again, so it's better just to buy a Freesat PVR instead. No free lunch, and no free laptop
