Egypt Nile Cruise

In February the better half booked a nile cruise for December this year through Thompson but in view of the deteriorating political & civil situation in the area she has lost the desire and nerve to do the cruise.

I have spoken to Thompson today and they have cancelled cruises out to late September but no further than that and can't say when they will update the situation.

If they eventually cancel our cruise we will be offered a refund or swop to another holiday but is there anything we can do now to cancel the holiday without losing our money or are we stuck with waiting to see which way Egypt goes?

I think you're stuck with it for now

TBH - they'll have to make a decision in a few weeks or so and I can't see the situation improving enough any time soon.
Things like this never improve quickly, they only deteriorate quickly.

At the moment it would be considered simply changing your mind. Unless the FCO declare it unsafe to travel then you are at the mercy of Thompson and the contract you agreed to when you booked.
  • I should imagine the situation in Egypt won't be much better by the time you were supposed to be going on your cruise so you will probably get your money back anyway. Will probably be worse if anything

Currently no UK operator is operating Nile Cruises and unfortunately it looks as though Egypt is heading towards civil war which will probably close down the Red sea resorts as well. There is no effective government at the moment and that means no control over health and safety and so many other issues relevant to tourists.

The problem is of course that operators have invested a lot of money in Egypt and are reluctant to let it go. Interestingly, the only advice on the Thomson website at the moment relates to the fact that they will charge cancellation charges if you want to get out of a holiday to Red Sea resorts but no such mention for any other Egyptian holidays. It might be worth phoning and ask in light of this can you transfer to another holiday at no extra charge.

Most Egyptians are pretty savvy and know what side their bread is "buttered" on. They are nothing if not pragmatic and I don't believe civll war is imminent. I would say the Red Sea resorts will carry on much as normal, not sure about Upper Nile though.

The estimated 3000+ Egyptians killed and rising might disagree.
Who decides what a war is?
They say Muslim brother hood, but they are still Egyptians.
The Democratically elected Government has been displaced by an armed malicia who are butchering the people in the streets and some people want to know if it is safe to go for a holiday.

Has it occurred to you that maybe you are the victim of propaganda and the truth lies somewhere in the middle of what is being reported by people with axes to grind on both sides of the story?????
