Housing benefit advice

If my ex partner was to move in with me could I claim housing/council benefit? He earns approx £26000 pa we dont have any savings, only debt!
I'm not currently working ( although have worked for 32 years), as I've suffered 2 spinal fractures and I cant cope with going down the ESA/sickness route, as that makes me more ill than I already feel. I'm awaiting surgery.
Any advice would be helpful, thank you.

you can run through the benefit calculator such as turn2us and it will let you know if you are entitled to any help but it is unlikely with his salary

    On 26k? No........

Wait, EX partner? Would you be sharing a room / bed?

I guess it all depends on his "role" in the house..... partner / lodger / carer?
  • At the minute it would be innitially to help me. Its a 2 bed house, but not sure if that would change, though its doubtful. The total monthly outgoings including his travel would be approx £1650 ( this doesn't include food or my prescription costs).
I just cant face the ESA route, 20 plus page forms, possible medicals, possible appeals etc while I'm ill and waiting for surgery.

Benefits do not take outgoings into account so they would only look at his £26k income
  • Is he helping you financially as well as with your health needs? If so, it does sound like you would be living as a couple in the eyes of the DWP/ LA etc, and hence his income would be taken into account.

Perhaps instead your ex could help fill out the forms and deal with DWp on your behalf?

You can purchase a Pre-Payment Certificate for your prescriptions, the 12 month option can be paid for by DD at £10.40 per month over ten months.
I'd also suggest posting on the Debt Free Wanabee section of the board.
  • Thanks all for your advice, much appreciated.
