I am about to spend £4k on a car from an independent dealer. I'm going to be paying a deposit of £500. Is it best to put this on a credit card? (and pay off immediately) Will this give me the Section 75 'protection'?

Yes user a credit card as you have full S75 protection for the full amount, even if you pay the rest in cash0 -
Make sure that it is a personal credit card and not a company one and S75 doesn't apply to business purchases and check that the payment you make is going directly to the trader and not through a third party payment transfer service. (this is unlikely, but you never know).0
