Selling a Web Domain to somebody in the USA

Hello all.

I hope you can offer me some advice?

I'm selling a web domain name I own to somebody in the USA. We have agreed on a fee of $750. I,m looking for the best way to get the funds.
Paypal is an option, but there are fee's involved. Can anybody recommend another safe way for me to receive the funds?

Also this is the first time I have done this. Is it fairly straight forward?
The domain is registered in the USA with Lunarpages, and the buyer wants to transfer it to GoDaddy.

Many thanks for any advice that's offered.

I guess you want the buyer to be responsible for transferring the full $750 to you and pay any fees to make that happen.

Its the wrong way round for you but the post office offer a service for 'free' to send money from the UK to a foreign bank account (albeit their exchange rate is adjusted so thats where they make their cut)

The US have options including Western Union - as far as I know you do the deal and you can walk into a WU branch and withdraw the £ notes. Be careful though, you might need to agree how many 'pounds' you will end up with in your hand. I am sure you already know $750 is around £480 but does the buyer know there may be fees involved, it might end up costing him/her $800 to get $750 worth to you.

See link for 'how does western union work'

You are fortunate to be the seller as all the risk is really on the other party as you could theoretically run off with the cash into the sunset! Make sure you have cash/cleared funds before transferring anything as you will NOT get the domain back once you transfer.

PS - is there a fee to transfer ownsership of the domain - if so then have you agreed who is going to pay for that?

Good luck and well done for registering a domain that is worth some money!

a domain depending on its TLD (.com/.co.uk etc.) will cost to transfer. also if its a .uk domain their could be issues if it is to be owned by someone in the USA, just like to have a .us domain you must also have a USA physical address.

Use Escrow . com - they have a special domain name service. I used it when I sold a domain last year, gives protection for both sides.

As per the above. Escrow is a much safer option to avoid possible chargebacks with PayPal etc.

I am interested how this one turned out in the end.

If the OP iis still out there then are you able to finish off the thread?
  • Hi. paypal won't ask for fees if you get the personal option

Too late for OP no doubt but if others come across this...

One issue is getting the money in dollars which will attract fees to convert to sterling too regardless of transfer chosen. Paypal may well be easiest and as above I think personal transfers from PayPal funds don't attract fees although the buyer would need to get things right and tranfer money into their PayPal account.

A while back when google adsense used to send dollar cheques I used to use http://auctionchex.com/ who took the cheque and transferred sterling to your account. It all seemed rather dodgy but it worked flawlessly for me right up til google started transferring sterling into your account themselves. Not sure it's worth setting up for a one off payment.
