Facebook: unable to see photos I have been tagged in

Hi, a friend took pics of my kids and uploaded them on fb then tagged me. But I cannot see them at all. Not even notification that I have been tagged! I do see when any other person has tagged me in a pic/post. I do keep seeing some numbers pop up next to my name and 'home' in the top right corner of fb which means something is there for me but once I click on the number it disappears. i have checked my security settings and nothing. Likewise, someone sent me a message (were not linked as friends then) and it seems the message got hidden for a long time until i stumbled onto it by chance! What is going on? I would be eternally grateful if someone could help me solve all this.

Check your friends wall, it should show you a history of photos he\she has added. Its possible that they have misspelt your name and tagged the photo incorrectly.

As above on friends wall then like each pic?
I get the same problem but they come and randomly go on my page?
I tend to put it down to glitches and upgrades at random US times.
