that is standard, in my experience. you have to escalate the matter as quickly as you can & get through to someone in England who will actually listen & understand.

i've never tried it, but i'd have thought that your NatWest online banking would have guided you to enter a reference. no offence, but making sure that a payment to your account is referenced to your account is always going to be sensible.

Did the first statement mention the direct debit? I suspect it didn't.

i don't use NatWest for a current account nowadays, but if you look to make a payment from most banks they will find the payment details for you. set that up for a girlfriend to pay my Barclaycard from her Halifax account the other night.
