Noisy washing machine

My Ignis washing machine has become a bit noisy. At first I thought the noise was the little container you put gel liquid in knocking about inside the drum, but I'm back to using powder and the noise is still there, sometimes it sounds like a knock, others more a grinding.
It's worse when on a wash rather than spin, no noise when turning drum by hand, and I've cleaned the filter and there's nothing stuck there. Tried moving the drum and there's not any play, so don't think it's the bearings.
This may be related, or may not, but the past twice I have run a boil wash, it hasn't completed a cycle, the service light comes on during the rinse part of the cycle, but I've never bothered to get it fixed, but the noise is more concerning me at the minute. Any ideas?

A grinding noise would tend to indicate the bearings are failing. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Yes bearings. Our washer got noisier and noisier until in conked out. Took the top off and the concrete slab had completely broken in bits.0
