Possibly a really stupid question

This was prompted by a £70 BT phone bill, that only included £14 worth of calls.
If I switch telephone providers, do I still have to pay BT the line rental? I know it used to be the case a few years ago, I'm not sure if it's changed now though.

Hi,
yes you can switch providers, I did it from BT to Plusnet, as I already had BB with Plusnet.
Though looking at prices now I see there is only 95p a month difference in line rental, though you can save a bit if you pay annually.
You may be able to save more if you take BB as well.0 -
No you dont have to pay BT for your line rental if you switch to another supplier.
Whats the other £56 for after deducting calls ?0 -

I would think line rental, 3 x £15.45 (£46.35) + £9.27 vat = £55.62.0 -
You would certainly have to pay someone for line rental, but it doesn't have to be BT as it is usually cheaper if you combine.
If you are lucky enough to in a Virgin cable area, then there is no need to pay line rental at all as they can supply BB with no need for a phone line.0 -

You can save on line rental by switching providers but, increasingly, the amount you can save is diminishing.
If you stay with BT, I'd recommend 18185 for your non-inclusive calls (5p connection and 0p/minute for 01/02/03 calls at all times regardless of duration).
www.18185.co.ukTime has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Thanks all, it'll be a while until we can switch, as we moved into a new build in March.Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j
