Roofing question

I need a new roof as it is old, and the metal clips have rotted away. But the slates are better quality than the modern rubbish. Can i not just have the old tiles refitted with new clips, would this save me any money, or is it a stupid idea. Help !

Yes - get a local roofer to give you a quote for stripping of, refelting, new battens and then retile with exisiting tiles with an allowance for replacement tiles for breakages etc. I would also get a quote for retiling with new aswell

That's a pretty sweeping generalisation of a statement to make. That modern roof materials are rubbish.
I'd like to know where you got hold of that little gem of information. I know what sort of roof covering I would prefer and it's not some 100 year old slates.
People seem to think that old houses were better built than modern ones. But it is a fact that spec builders have always built to the lowest standard they could get away with. At least nowadays they are bound by building regulations which ensure at least the semblance of some sort of standards are reached.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

The average price for a used 24x12 slate is £3, 24x14 £4, and most in poor quality.
Get a price for a new roof with modern tiles, and ask the roofer for a discount, as he should be able to sell any decent old slates for £1 each.
A thankyou is payment enough .

A lot would depend on the character of the property on whether you should reuse old slates
  • I think the OP is referring to composite slate, although he seems to be unsure if his covering is slate or tile.

I would suspect they will reuse any slates that they can and replace those that are damaged. I had a similar thing done to mine recently and it was a terrace house and cost me £2500.
