How to Repair Cracked Mortar On an Exterior Brick Wall

hi

the exterior wall to my yard/car port appears to have hairline cracks no more then 2mm wide - is it worth removing the loose mortar with a chisel and replacing it - if so how or is it safe to leave it?

i am looking to tear down the car port as it is not a professional job by any means and was installed by the previous owner of the house.

i think i may as well do two birds with one stone so to speak

thanks

If it's not getting rained on it's not that big a deal but if it's not much why not just repair it. I'd use a masonry drill and drill several holes along the mortar lines. If it's weak enough you should be able to move the drill along as you're spinning it.

For about £6 you can get a mortar rake for an angle gringer, like a router cutter but diamond studded.

Even better for about £12 you get a radial mortar rake, just like a grinding or cutting disc for a 4" grinder but a mortar joint in width.

That's the tool of choice to be honest

Well the picture shows much more than render damage, there is certainly some movement between the upper and lower windows.

The key question is how recent is this, and is it stable now,

The OP PM'd a pic for the benefit of others.

Couldn't say how recent but looks stable to but it sounds like an easy enough job i guess. Can normal cement be used
