Free Interior Design Inspiration

Hello all,
I'm buying my first home, and whilst it's in very good condition it does require updating of decor!

I thought I'd share the free resources I've found so far for interior design inspiration, and wondered if anyone had any additional tips?

1) TV programmes
Homes under the Hammer, Kirstie's Fill Your Home for Free, Restoration Man, Grand Designs - any of these will give you some ideas, and you can watch lots of old episodes on catchup/on your laptop.

2) Magazines
These retail for around £4 each, but I have managed to get lots of free copies through IPC Media of things like Country Homes and Interiors, Ideal Home and so forth. They're also frequently at the local car boot sales, for 50p or so. I check with friends too, to see what magazines they want to swap with me. If you buy any of the Sunday papers, there's often an interiors section. Finally, see what stores offer free home magazines - M&S do a good free one, but places like Next and Laura Ashley charge £2 for theirs!

3) Pinterest
The online photo pinboard is fantastic for seeing what other people have done with more creativity and time than me!!

Where do other people look for inspiration?

  • Other places I would recommend are:

Library - depending how up to date yours is, they will have a few interior design reference books/ how to create books etc.

Charity shops - regularly will have decorating books etc

Other peoples home - might be just me but I love to visit friends and family homes - see what works, what doesn't, the colour scheme, where they got the furniture etc

Show homes - years ago when I was looking for a property just visiting new development show homes was an insight to see what was in particularly for wallpaper/paint on featured walls.

I use the library for so many other things, I have no idea why I didn't think of it for interiors books!

    Thank you!
