The previous owners of our house had changed to a combi but not bothered to remove the water tank, so worth checking what you have.

We've since changed to a condensing combi boiler and had no problem in heating our 3 bed (soon to be 4) house.

I think the tank is working because when I run the hot water, the boiler does not fire up

If that's the case then you need someone more expert to take a proper look as if the hot water IS connected to the boiler system then the boiler should fire to reheat the water, not necessarily instantaneously, but according to whatever the programmers is set for the hot water times required :(

Either that or its just heating the water with the immersion heater ;)

    hi - thanks so far

the boiler is an "Ideal Boiler HE24"

    thanks
  • Concentrate you funds on other energy/money savings then come back to the boiler in years to come. False economy to change something that new for something which may (but may not) result in a saving.

Having had both, I'm more of a system boiler and tank man. Plus, if and when you come to sell it would be more suitable for a family buyer.

One cheap thing to do is insulate all the hot water pipes where you can get to them so you don't have to run the tap for so long before it gets hot. Also what sort of insulation does the tank have? Can you improve it. Both cost tens of pounds and are likely to save you more money!!

    Thanks
This is a bit of a forever home so not looking to sell.

Why does a tank suit a family as opposed to water on demand

^ A tank provides a fair amount of hot water instantly to multiple outlets at an adequate flow rate and the boiler is then used to back up the hot water once the tank's hot water has been used up. This is useful is someone is doing the washing up at the same time as someone having a shower.

A combi boiler boils water on demand and raises the temperature of the incoming water by a certain depending on the size of the boiler. If multiple people have hot water taps open then there may not be sufficient pressure or temperature of water at the multiple outlets. Plus, you always waste quite a bit of water from a combi before the hot water feeds through to the tap.
Everyone is entitled to my opinion!
