can i give a stranger my bank and acc number safely to receive the money direct to my account?

no problem - as mentioned befiore when you pay by cheque it has your sc and ac number so anyone with your cheque could supposedly access your account and rinse it

has that ever happened - no of course not because just having your sc, ac and name isn't enough

    cheers

Yeah but this (well deserved) example of abuse of current account information is vastly over-used. All Direct Debit recipients can easily be traced (even if they use a Direct Debit service rather than run the DD operation themselves). If they cannot provide conclusive evidence that the account holder gave them authority to execute the DDs, they will be in red hot water.

As has been pointed out countless times, people have happily been writing hundreds of millions of cheques, all of which contained sort code and account number, and were often made out to total strangers. Don't you think a determined fraudster would by now have devised a scheme by which they can then clean out the account via Direct Debits...ah, no, you are right, see above......

Apart from that, there is the Direct Debit guarantee.
