Cheque not showing in account (RBS)

I paid a cheque into a cash machine on Saturday evening, got a receipt. Cheque still not showing in my account.

Called the bank today and they've advised that if they've lost it then I'll have to request a new cheque from the sender. Surely there's more robust processes in place than this? I get that the figure on the receipt is the one that I entered but the fact is the fault isn't on my part and NO cheque has gone into the account at all (ie. I didn't deposit a £20 cheque and say it was £800).

Waiting for them to call me back but is this really how banks work?

And yes, this will be the last time I pay in at a machine! :rotfl:

Yes, it's how they work. Without a cheque they can't claim the funds. Shows why bank transfers are much to be preferred, (providing the account details are entered correctly, which is beyond some people, see many, many other posts for examples.)

Ask for a payment from the bank to compensate your time and effort in obtaining a replacement and delay in receiving the funds.

What kind of account is it? I have a NatWest Step/Basic account and in the past a cheque paid in over the counter only showed in my balance after it had cleared.

Staff are too lazy to open the box - simple as that

I have encountered the same with this banking group

Very few people use this facility (in certain areas at least - so staff don't bother to check) and I wont be using it again either

This happened to my son, he asked for the box to be checked, lo and behold the cheque was there, caught inside the machine.
Ask for the box to be checked.

    Thanks for your replies everyone.

Bank phoned me back and it had "Just been processed" - imagine that! Sounds like a case of them not checking the machine. Means a couple of days delay in it clearing but I'm just happy I don't have to go back to the council for another cheque as they're even more useless than the bank!
